About the scheme

The National Highways proposed A303 Stonehenge scheme is intended to improve the A303 past Stonehenge between Amesbury and Berwick Down.

 It includes:
  • New eight-mile dual carriageway with a two mile tunnel under much of the World Heritage Site
  • A new junction at the Countess roundabout so the A303 will run directly over the A345
  • Bypass to the north of the small village of Winterbourne Stoke, with a viaduct over the River Till valley
  • A new junction between the A303 and A360 moving the existing Longbarrow roundabout away from the World Heritage Site

The role of the Scientific Committee

The Stonehenge Scientific Committee explains how they provide independent advice for National Highways on the proposed A303 Stonehenge project.
